It must be October…
Friday, October 30th, 2009As the holiday season approaches, I’ve had numerous opportunities to use my camera! I’ve taken something like 900 pictures in the last 10 days(which is even a lot for me)! This includes multiple outings to the pumpkin patch… they are probably getting to know me by now! The pumpkin patch shoots seemed to delight everyone’s inner child- meandering through a garden of pumpkins, searching for that perfect one to carve or decorate among the numerous sizes, shapes, and colors! I’ve updated my photography section on the website with some of these photos! Here’s a sample:

JHB Photo Shoot
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009The Jordan Howerton Band out of Joplin, MO, recently contacted me about doing the artwork and photos for their upcoming album. They happen to be recording in OKC this week, so we met up yesterday for their photo shoot.
We were all pretty game when it came to scouting locations in downtown OKC, so when we saw a roof accessible by fire escape.. well, what else?! we climbed up there and got some great shots! Oh, and while we were there, the band got mistaken for The Flaming Lips.. apparently just a few hours before we got there, they had a photo shoot on the same rooftop. Hopefully their shots ended up as good as ours! Here’s a sneak peek!

Behind The Scenes: ‘Heavenly Sound’ Album Design
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009I recently started designing an album cover (one of my favorite types of projects) for this really cool venture done by Global Journey. The album has been about a year in the making and features worship music from around the world in locations such as Nicaragua, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda and the Philippine Islands. Most of the album was recorded with an ordinary, no frills recording device; some of the tracks are acapella, others have simple drum and guitar backings, but in all of them you can hear people coming together to authentically worship the King. The album will feature something like 14 tracks and all of the proceeds will be given back to the ministry of Global Journey to reach “the ends of the earth”. Here’s a sneak peek of what I’ve been working on for the album:

a logo for the album, representing worldwide worship and Acts 1:8 (Global Journey’s key verse)

something that I drew to represent movement across the world

combined with pictures taken by the mission teams, putting faces to the voices

Fun with Fonts, #1
Thursday, October 8th, 2009Arial vs. Helvetica. Think you know the difference? Here’s an interesting quiz by Ironic Sans pitting the two against each other by taking 20 famous logos that use Helvetica and replacing them with Arial.
So which is Helvetica and which is the impostor? Choose for yourself here with this quiz! How did I do? I missed one.. see if you can guess which one..
Not all fonts are created equal.

It’s In the Bag
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009After shopping at Target the other day for groceries, I came across a really cool incentive to always bring my reusable canvas bags with me. When I came to the check-out line, canvas bags in hand, I was pleasantly surprised to find that for every reusable bag that they fill, you get 5 cents off your total! I only had three of them with me, and not that saving 15 cents is the most exciting thing in the world (or worth blogging about), but it’s a great incentive for cities like my hometown, Enid OK, where they are considering banning plastic bags altogether due to the non-biodegradable bags overflowing the dump. Also, canvas bags usually hold more than plastic, which makes unloading much easier, and it’s better for the environment. All in all, it’s worth it!
As a result, I decorated an old hook hanger that I had lying around, and I now have a spot dedicated to holding my canvas bags- right by the front door so I won’t forget them!
Find out more about Enid’s story here.

Garage Sale Finds
Monday, October 5th, 2009When I was growing up, my dad was the garage sale king. He would find (and make) the best deals on everything from toys to vinyl records to (surprisingly) a windsurf board. I remember a few things in particular that he bought for me- a 3 piece Barbie A-frame house complete with furniture and accessories, a coca-cola directors chair, a pair of skates- that were really impressive to a little girl! Well, I guess that it’s in my blood too because this weekend I went garage sale-ing walked away with some great finds for work and play!
I left my outings with…
- 1 Polaroid sun 600. I think that it works, and I know that I am going to use it! But in the mean time, it will be displayed on my mantle (until I can get my hands on some ever-so-scarce Polaroid 600 film)
- 1 Polaroid presto (complete with carrying case),
- a working photography light called a Sun Gun (at $5, it was my most expensive item) that I will use on future shoots,
- 2 former library books, complete with detailed check in/check out cards,
- a Madeline children’s book and Hercules children’s book (I’ll use for display),
- 2 small jam jars featuring illustrations of a bear and zebra,
- a bow,
- a little tote bag advertising the ‘Help Me Be Good’ book series (which I read as a child),
… all that and a barrel of monkeys! Jackpot!

Spero Project Painting
Saturday, October 3rd, 2009
Happy Friday everyone! Tonight I got the chance to create a couple of “improv paintings” for an awesome emerging organization based in OKC called The Spero Project during a conference that they held downtown. The Spero Project focuses on uniting church and non-profit resources and “encouraging individuals and local churches to meet the needs of a global community in innovative, effective, and exciting ways.”
My goal for the night was to paint an interpretive, visual symbol of the themes discussed around me during this session of the conference. Usually the way that I do this is (first and foremost) I listen to the discussion taking place. I’ll jot down phrases and keywords that resonate with me, and from there, develop the imagery to fit the theme (which is also how I work when I’m designing)! Some themes that I wrote down tonight? ‘Christ the vine’, ‘Connecting the body of Christ’, ‘it’s not formulaic’, ‘it looks different from place to place’, ‘it’s rooted’, ‘it’s fruit-bearing’. And the result?
I incorporated the themes in the use of color and movement- representing the far-reaching, free-flowing love of Christ and the call to be rooted and reaching across denominations and boundaries.
Painting is something that I really enjoy, and it’s something that I’ve gotten into more recently… more on that in future posts
Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow!
