So, as you can probably tell from the sparseness of recent updates, things have been pretty busy recently! I’ve been designing a lot, and now you can see for yourself! I’ve done some big updates to the website, adding a project to each category (except the photography section, but don’t worry, that will be coming soon, too!) So go check it out! Hopefully you’ve been watching & enjoying the Winter Olympics! One thing that has caught my eye is the overall visual style and look of the Games- the unifying pieces- the colors, background designs, that have been present in all of the events and tie together the looks of the variety of sports featured in Vancouver. Developing the iconic look of the Olympic Games is a tall order. The designers not only have to reflect the electric feel of the sports, but also reflect the spirit of the host city.

The VANOC website says of the identity:

“The Vancouver 2010 graphic identity seeks to unify and beautify the Games with a consistent look and feel throughout all its environments and communications… The country’s multiculturalism inspires Vancouver 2010 to portray transformation and fusion as a major theme within the graphic identity. It also represents balance and connections between natural and urban environments, reflecting how Canadians live in and contribute to both surroundings… Design representations of water and vegetation are incorporated frequently and serve as a symbol of nature’s nourishing and rejuvenating powers. Emotive, dynamic athlete imagery captures the heroism and beauty of sport.”

Hey, just finished a personal piece. It’s good to design for myself every once in a while!

I also decided to be productive and did a massive update in the photography section of the website with some of my favorite shots from my trip to Europe last year! Here are just a few of the examples you can see on the photography page..

This one was overlooking the city of Paris from.. you guessed it, the Eiffel Tower! They had these beautifully ornate telescopes on the observation deck for viewing the city, and I loved them! With the city lights and reflections from the bronze telescope, this series was one of my favorites. It gives you a feel for the city, and I feel the same way when I look at them now as I did when I was standing on the Eiffel Tower..

This was taken at the Louvre… how can I even describe this place? I guess I’ll let the pictures speak for me We only had a few hours at the Louvre, and I don’t even think that I could have fully discovered all of the magnificent, beautiful and historical pieces housed there in a week..

part of anticipating Christ’s birth makes me think of this style of religious icons of the Mother and Child used for mediation from the Byzantine era. The goal of the artwork of this time period was for the artist to paint as closely as possible to the same style as that of their contemporaries. Some people believed this came from the fact that the apostle Luke was a painter and supposedly painted a portrait of Mary later in her life, and that these artists wanted that visual accuracy, so they let very little artistic interpretation influence their work, but relied more on upholding what had been done before.
This is such a cool concept to me because all of these artists’ goal was to correctly depict Christ. Like Paul says, “follow my example as I follow the example of Christ”…
